Pikeville Medical Center ("PMC") has operated an acute care facility in Pikeville for 80 years. Under the leadership and direction of its locally-elected Board of Directors, PMC has become the preeminent provider of healthcare in Pike County and the surrounding region.

Today, PMC has the largest, most expansive medical treatment facility in eastern Kentucky. With more than 535,000 square feet of space, 261 beds (expandable to 500) and over 1300 employees, PMC aggressively recruits physicians to practice in Pikeville, and it's medical staff now includes 189 doctors from a wide variety of specialty and sub-specialty areas. PMC is also a teaching hospital, working to train primary care physicians, registered nurses and other healthcare professionals for the east Kentucky region.

As the largest private employer in eastern Kentucky, PMC is a major catalyst for the east Kentucky economy.

In order to expand on their present efforts, PMC has established the Pikeville Medical Development Corporation ("PDMC"), with offices in Louisville. Editor's note: As of January, 2007 - offices are located at Pikeville Medical Center, 911 Bypass Road, Pikeville, KY 41501 The mission of Pikeville Medical Development Corporation is to:

• Develop collaborative research initiatives between PMC and major medical research entities in Louisville as well as Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine and other similar institutions.
• Create an e-Health system at PMC which will serve as a model for other medical entities throughout the Commonwealth.
• Obtain public and private funding for the development of the local economy and for the expansion of the programs and facilities at PMC.
• Create a high-tech, regional research and development Institute in eastern Kentucky to work with other medical partners in fostering advanced medical-related concepts and other new economy-type startup companies.
• Encourage private companies to locate in eastern Kentucky so as to enhance economic stability.
• Link the economic engine of PMC with the economic development activities of governmental, non-profit and for-profit entities in eastern Kentucky.

These Goals, while lofty, will enable PMC to fulfill its healthcare mission while helping to drive Eastern Kentucky on a path of economic prosperity equal to any other area of the country.
